Looking for women who are working on the best short films in the UK right now, across all key areas of creativity; we want directors, editors, cinematographers, writers, producers and composers to submit their work. And it’s not only craftswomen that we’re looking for – we also want short films (directed by both women and men) that put interesting female characters at their centre. Sadly, we’ve found these are few and far between, but we’re sure the times are-a-changin’ and we want to see a lot more of this work. If you’re not sure what makes the grade, you might want to try holding your film against the Bechdel Test. Finally, we’re really pleased to be introducing a new category this year for women film journalists. Like the craft of filmmaking itself, the number of women working as professional film critics is far surpassed by the number of male voices we’re used to hearing in mainstream media. But UnderWire wants to change that, encouraging women to step up and get their work seen. As Sight & Sound demonstrated in a competition they ran recently, there are a LOT of smart women out there who should have a platform for their work. With the UnderWire award for Best Film Journalist, we hope to see this happen.

Total requests from the film industry have reached 118; 5 deals have been offered and one script has been optioned.

The Deadline for Submissions for scripts, short films, feature films and TV shows is 31 August 2011

]]><![CDATA[SPEAKERS’ CORNER: Ask and you shall Receive]]>Sun, 03 Jul 2011 19:27:11 -0800http://prescienceproductions.weebly.com/1/post/2011/07/speakers-corner-ask-and-you-shall-receive.html What you receive may not always be to your liking but, as any good PR Specialist will tell you, receiving negative feedback, as well as the positive ones, should be equally welcomed and acted upon in a positive manner.  Case in point, the recent alleged sacking of US PR firm, The Redner Group Limited who handled the PR for @2K Games, the developer of @Duke Nukem.  The PR firm received poor reviews of the latest version of the game and showed their displeasure by going on Twitter to inform Reviewers that they would not be receiving review copies from them again stating “Too many went too far with their reviews... we are reviewing who gets games next time and who doesn’t based on today’s venom.”  This appalled 2K Games who also went on to Twitter to inform people that Redner no longer represented them.

What Redner should have done, in my opinion, was to engage with and acknowledge the Reviewers’ concerns, ask how they thought the game could be improved, inform that their concerns would be taken on board and Thank them!  This would show transparency, possible improvement in the game resulting in a better end-user experience and, above all, that honest reviews (not selected ones) were obtained. Thus enhancing their client’s Brand Reputation as well as their own. ]]><![CDATA[SPEAKERS' CORNER: Bursaries for International Arts Professionals to attend decibel performing arts showcase - September 2011 Manchester, UK‏]]>Fri, 15 Apr 2011 11:27:02 -0800http://prescienceproductions.weebly.com/1/post/2011/04/speakers-corner-bursaries-for-international-arts-professionals-to-attend-decibel-performing-arts-showcase-september-2011-manchester-uk.html decibel International Connections Programme,  a bursary scheme, managed by Visiting Arts, the programme will provide a small number (8-10) of bursaries for mid-career cultural practitioners to attend the Decibel Performing Arts Showcase and Creative Case for Diversity launch. to this year’s decibel Performing Arts Showcase (September 12 – 16 2011).

Applicants must be based outside of England and show they are arts professionals, passionate and committed to diverse work. Submissions will fall in to four practitioner sections: performance presenters, producers, artistic directors and cultural critics. For more details regarding which section to apply under see the application criteria document.

The closing date for receipt of applications is Tuesday 26 April 2011 10am GMT

The International Connections programme bursary will cover the full or partial cost of a nine day stay in Manchester, England. Visiting Arts will arrange flights, visa sponsorship certificates, UK transfers and accommodation, but applicants will be responsible for obtaining their own visa in the British consulate of their country and ensuring they have the appropriate and up to date travel insurance and documents.

In early May, 50 of London’s top actors, writers, directors and producers aged 21-30 will be selected to spend a week living in New York, learning from top industry professionals, and developing plays to be performed in a central Manhattan venue. In late May, 50 of New York’s finest will travel to London to tread the boards at the legendary Old Vic Theatre, now under the artistic direction of Kevin Spacey.

The Exchange will provide artists with intensive networking opportunities, expanded professional relationships, and the opportunity to start building a career on the other side of the Atlantic.                     Effects of Funding Cuts on Organisations

With all the recent funding cuts and talk of austerity, this is certainly a challenging time for us all.   The rise in unemployment, in my opinion, will have an impact on individual giving and Major Donors and Philanthropist will be more scrutinous when deciding who should get their money.  There will be stiff competition for the funding grants that are available and  organisations, now more than ever, need to be business ready and think of new and creative ways of fundraising: 

  • Ensure your Organisational systems and procedures are in place.

  • Mission Statement - Have a clear vision of what you want to achieve (so many organisations fail to get funding because their applications or bids are generic and/or too vague).  Remember, you may know what you want to do but in order to achieve your mission, you must be able to communicate this to others.

  • Are you achieving the aims and objectives of your organisation or do you need to diversify?

  • Partnering with another organisation which compliments yours may assist your funding bid - ensure you choose the right partners and have an exit strategy in place.

  • To engage with Potential Donors, you must speak their language.  According to Paul Mitchell, Director of the global financial services group UBS, the profile of the wealthy has changed.  They’re dynamic, business-minded high earners, entrepreneurs or investment bankers in their late twenties and early thirties.

  • Define your Business Model - Major Donors and Philanthropists like to get involved. They want to know how their money will be spent and the risks involved. Their expertise could add value and aid sustainability.

  • Utilise the power already within your organisation.  Recognise and nurture the social entrepreneurs you work with (including your volunteers) and the people they know.
